You Don’t Need to Follow Everyone Else’s Instagram Rules

One of the biggest reasons Instagram feels heavy, frustrating, or overwhelming for business owners and freelancers isn’t the platform itself... it’s the pressure to do it like some Instagram guru has said.

Post this way.

Use that format.

Create Reels, but also carousels, and don’t forget Stories, and you must mix it up or the algorithm will punish you.

It’s a lot and for many people, it’s the exact reason they stop showing up altogether.

There is no one 'right' way to show up on Instagram

People consume content differently.

Some people spend ages scrolling the Reels tab (that's me) and barely glance at static posts. Others love reading carousels and almost never watch video content. Some scroll their home feed, some live on the explore page, and some barely look at posts at all, they just tap through Stories.

Because of that, yes, there is value in different content formats. But, yep, I have a but...

If creating content in different formats becomes stressful, time-consuming, or overwhelming, then it’s not helping your business.

Consistency comes from ease, not pressure

If the easiest way for you to create content is talking-head videos, over and over again, then do that. If that’s how you can show up consistently, confidently, and without the mental load, it’s a good strategy.

If writing carousels feels natural and enjoyable then do more of them.

If Stories are where you feel most like yourself, focus more of your energy there.

The 'best' content format is the one you’ll actually stick with.

When trying to do everything becomes the reason you do nothing, something needs to change.

Your process matters more than the platform

Finding your way on Instagram isn’t just about formats... it’s about process. And I am a process junkie!

That includes:

  • How you capture ideas

  • What tools you use

  • What apps feel intuitive rather than draining

You might plan content in Airtable, Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Keep. You might prefer pen and paper. You might use AI support like ChatGPT, Claude, or something else entirely. You might batch content once a month or create it as you go.

None of these are better or worse. They’re just different.

And the right process is the one that reduces friction and makes showing up feel manageable.

Instagram should support your business, not drain it

When you stop forcing yourself to follow every rule and start building a process that fits your energy, strengths, and lifestyle, everything shifts.

You show up more and you overthink less. I am all for that!

And Instagram stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like a tool you can actually live with.

Your way is allowed. In fact, it’s the only way that really works.
